Cockatoos 16 Month 2009 Calendar. Cockatoo is the name applied to any of the 21 different bird species which belong to the Cacatuidae family. The name cockatoo originates from the Malay name, kakaktua, which literally translated means "older sister". Due to their short wing span and smaller features most Cockatoos can be found either in Australia or the islands which surround it. Cockatoos share many features with that of other parrots including the characteristic curved beak shape, the "zygodactyls" foot. The main differences for these birds is their spectacular movable head crest! Most of these birds are bright in colour and many are blue and green as is the colour seen in most true parrots.
