In the 1930's, a number of breeders bred for increased size and guarding ability, which conversely left a trait of temperamental unreliability in certain breed lines, leading to a tendency towards unprovoked aggression.
The Bernese Mountain Dog is an ancient breed which had almost disappeared in the late 1800's. Its recovery is largely due to the efforts of one individual Swiss – Franz Schertenlieb. This breed was given its present name in 1908.
