In the 1920s, an American offered prize money to exhibitors of King Charles Spaniels whose dogs had long noses as depicted in Van Dyck's painting of King Charles II and his Spaniels. By the 1940's, these dogs had been classified as a separate breed and given the Cavalier prefix and so this beautiful breed became officially recognised.
