They are primarily solitary and nocturnal birds of prey and there are believed to be some 200 different species, many of which are endangered due to mans influence over their hunting grounds and habitats. Owls mostly hunt small mammals, insects, and other birds and it is due to the removal of hedges and forests, barn conversions and intensified farming techniques that have resulted in a sharp fall their typical prey and usual habitats. This has been particularly prevalent over the last 2 centuries.
