Saint Bernards 2012 Calendar. The Saint Bernard is thought to descend from alpine mastiffs, taken to Switzerland by the Roman army. At one stage, the St Bernard was almost extinct, but was revitalised, possibly using the bloodlines of Newfoundland’s and Great Danes. The name St Bernard first came into use in 1865.
